Jiangxi Yituo Mining Equipment (YTO) is pleased to announce the successful commissioning and handover of a 500-ton-per-day iron ore gravity separation plant in the Shieni District of Northern Ghana. This turnkey project marks another milestone in YTO’s expansion into the West African mining market and demonstrates our expertise in providing complete mineral processing solutions for iron ore operations.
Project Background
Ghana is rich in iron ore resources, with an estimated 1.4 billion tons of reserves, primarily located in the northern and western regions of the country . The Shieni deposit alone contains approximately 1.3 billion tons of iron ore with an average grade of 33.8% .
Our client, a local Ghanaian mining company, had been operating a small-scale mining operation but faced significant challenges with low recovery rates and inconsistent concentrate quality. After conducting a comprehensive market evaluation and comparing several international suppliers, they selected YTO as their trusted partner for this full-scale plant upgrade project.
The project objectives were clear:
- Design and build a complete 500t/d iron ore processing plant
- Achieve a final iron concentrate grade of at least 60%
- Maintain an overall recovery rate above 75%
- Provide full installation, commissioning and operator training services
YTO’s Customized Solution
Based on detailed ore testing conducted at our in-house laboratory, YTO’s engineering team designed a customized gravity separation process flow specifically optimized for the Shieni iron ore characteristics. The complete plant includes:
Crushing and Screening Circuit
- Primary jaw crusher for reducing run-of-mine ore to ≤250mm
- Secondary cone crusher for further size reduction to ≤30mm
- Double-deck vibrating screen for classification and closed-circuit crushing
Grinding and Classification Circuit
- Ball mill for grinding ore to the optimal liberation size of -200 mesh 65%
- Spiral classifier for efficient classification and closed-circuit grinding
Gravity Separation Circuit (Core Process)
- 2 sets of YTO-LL1200-4 start spiral chutes for roughing and scavenging operations
- 6 sets of YTO-LL900-2 start spiral chutes for cleaning operations
- 4 sets of 6-S shaking tables for final cleaning of high-grade concentrate
- 2 sets of diaphragm jigs for recovering coarse-grained iron minerals
Dewatering and Tailings Disposal
- Thickener for concentrate dewatering
- Filter press for final moisture reduction to ≤12%
- Tailings pond management system
Project Implementation
- The entire project was completed in just 6 months, from initial design to final commissioning:
- Months 1-2: Detailed engineering design and equipment manufacturing
- Month 3: Equipment shipping and delivery to site
- Months 4-5: On-site installation and civil works
- Month 6: Commissioning, trial operation and operator training
YTO dispatched a team of 8 experienced engineers and technicians to Ghana to supervise the entire installation process and provide on-site training for 20 local operators and maintenance staff. Despite challenges including the tropical climate and logistics constraints, our team completed the project ahead of schedule and within budget.
